Sound & Microphone

How do I configure my sound system and microphone in Windows?

Follow this procedure to configure the microphone and webcam in order to start a videoconference in Glowbl. The procedure is explained for Windows.
To install the hardware, plug it into the computer. If necessary, press the On/Off button.

Note: For wireless devices to work, the device must be connected before opening Glowbl.

Once the hardware has been connected, right-click the Sound button in the bottom-right corner of your computer’s Start menu and select the Playback tab. (If the button does not appear, click the Start menu and search for Sound.)

The following screen should appear.

On this screen, the speaker (or headphones) appears as a playback device (speaker).

The plugged-in hardware is not configured as the default device. (Instead, it simply shows as Ready.) To set it as the default device, right-click and select Set as Default Device.

This configuration causes the sound to be automatically directed to the chosen device. The device switches from Ready to Default Device.

Right-click the Sound button in the bottom-right corner of your computer’s Start menu and select the Recording tab. (If the button does not appear, click the Start menu and search for Sound.)

On this screen, the microphone appears as a recording device (microphone).

To change the name of the device, right-click => Properties on the device and change it to the name you want (here: Microphone to Plantronics Voyager Legend UC).

It is not configured as the default device. (Instead, it simply shows as Ready.) To set it as the default device, right-click => Set as Default Device. This allows you to have it by default, even in other applications.

  • The first step is to restart your browser. If you skip this step, the newly installed device might not be recognized.

Connect to your LiveStage.

In LiveStage, click the button next to Webcam at the top of the screen.

The settings screen appears as follows:

Click Activate microphone.

The list of microphones appears. This list shows all previously configured microphones, and their names are managed by Windows.

Select the microphone you want (Plantronics Voyager Legend UC here) and click Validate. Then, adjust the sound.

To do this, simply speak into the microphone. The indicator should remain in the green area. We recommend putting the microphone’s sound on the 3rd bar.

When you are finished with this step, click Next step.

The microphone appears and is configured once you press Finish.

Common Problems

Microphone

If the microphone does not appear in the list:

  1.  Verify that your microphone does not appear in the list. It is possible that Windows reset its name.
  2. Verify that you plugged in your microphone before launching the browser. Restart your browser (not just the tab).

If this does not work, contact us.

Case #1: You lack sufficient permissions:

Only the speakers can be heard by all participants. They are shown as large bubbles.

1. If you are a small bubble, this means that you are a spectator and cannot enable your microphone for everyone to hear.

2. You can request permission to become a speaker. Mouse over your bubble and click Demander les droits Conférencier [Request speaker permissions].

Case #2: Your microphone is already in use:

Verify that your microphone is not already being used by another software program (ex. Skype). If it is, close that other application.

Case #3: Your microphone is configured incorrectly:

1. Click the gear icon in LiveStage and try to change the microphone. It may be that the wrong microphone was selected.

2. Verify that the indicator below your bubble moves when you speak into your microphone. This means that sound is being transmitted properly through the microphone.

If this does not work, contact us.

An echo can be heard when a user’s sound is picked up by their microphone and then sent back to the other users. To fix this type of problem, we recommend using a headset with an attached microphone. If the user causing the echo does not have a headset with an attached microphone, that user should switch to Push-to-talk mode in order to minimize the echo.

If this does not work, contact us.

Sound

If the sound is coming through another device (or not at all):

  1. Right-click the Sound button in the bottom-right corner of your computer’s Start menu (or click the Start menu and search for Sound). Select the Playback tab, right-click the device you want, and click Set as Default Device.
  2.  Then restart your browser

If this does not work, contact us.
