Dynamic Debate: a lively activity for exploring complexity

Would you like to energise your training courses or workshops with an activity that is participative, reflective and full of energy? Dynamic Debate is an ideal activity for exploring a theme, bringing out a variety of viewpoints and building collective reflection. At the crossroads of debate, role-playing and collective intelligence, it stimulates discussion and shakes up certainties… always with kindness!

Objective of this activity

This activity enables participants to express their opinions, listen to those of others and enrich their thinking by physically positioning themselves in the space according to whether they agree or disagree with a statement.

Benefits

For the facilitator:

  • Facilitate a fluid and participative exchange without complex tools
  • Get an immediate read on attitudes and changes in opinion
  • Create a climate conducive to authentic expression

For the participants:

  • Strengthen their ability to argue and listen actively
  • Dare to express themselves, even on sensitive subjects
  • Experience the freedom to change their mind

How does it work?

Total duration: 40 minutes

1. Activity presentation (3 min)

The facilitator explains the principle of the Dynamic Debate, its objective, and gives instructions for its smooth running.

2. Positioning (2 min)

The facilitator reads out a statement. Participants position themselves according to their opinion.

3. Preparing arguments (10 min)

In small groups, participants work together to draft arguments to defend their position.

4. Dynamic Debate (20 min)

Collective debate: participants present their ideas and can change places if they are convinced by an opposing argument.

5. Closing and feedback (10 min)

Summing up and collective feedback on the experience. The facilitator can launch a survey or compare before and after photos.

Examples of use

1. Within a company

To explore issues of team culture, transformation or shared vision in a fun, collaborative way.

2. Within a training organisation

To introduce critical thinking and reflective posture, or to deal with sensitive subjects (e.g. inclusion, responsibility, etc.).

3. Within a school

To develop oral skills, tolerance of differing opinions and argumentation from secondary school onwards.
